Low-hardness rubber profiles

Exonel extrudes soft rubber profiles from about 20 Shore A, for joints that have to seal without much closing force. The section is cut to your drawing and the compound is formulated for the temperature and the environment the seal works in.

Why low hardness

Seals that close under light pressure.

Light closing force

A soft section compresses under a light catch or a few small screws, so a thin door or lid still seals without being pulled tight.

Takes up an uneven face

Soft rubber follows a flange that is not flat and fills the gap a harder section would bridge.

Protects what it seals against

Thin sheet, glass and painted faces take less load from a soft section than from a stiff one.

Cushions and damps

The same softness absorbs rattle and small movement between two parts.

Sections we extrude

Cut to your drawing.

P and D sections

Bulb profiles for door, lid and panel sealing, with a flat leg for bonding or clamping.

U-channel and edge trim

Pushed onto a sheet edge to seal and to cover the cut edge.

Cord and tube

Round solid cord and soft tube for simple gaskets and gap filling.

Flat strip

Soft strip for sealing, cushioning and anti-rattle use.

Where they are used

Typical applications.

Light enclosures and covers

Doors, lids and access panels that close on a catch rather than a bolted flange.

Lighting and luminaires

Soft gaskets that seal a fitting without distorting a lens or a thin housing.

Machine guards and panels

Edge sealing and anti-rattle strip between sheet-metal parts.

Gap filling

Soft sections that take up variation between two assembled parts.

FAQ

Common questions

How soft can you extrude?
From about 20 Shore A. That is the usual practical floor for a solid extruded section. Below that the surface finish starts to suffer, so if you need softer than 20 Shore A tell us what the seal has to do and we will suggest a sponge section instead.
What is the difference between a low-hardness solid profile and sponge?
A solid soft profile is dense rubber at a low durometer. Closed-cell sponge is foamed, so it compresses much further for the same force but has less strength in the section. Which one suits depends on how far the joint has to close and how much it has to hold.
Which polymer do you use?
Silicone for heat, UV and weather, and for the softest grades. EPDM where the duty is outdoor weather sealing and silicone is not needed. The polymer and the hardness are confirmed with you before any die is cut.
Can you match a soft profile I already use?
Yes. Send a short length of the existing profile or a drawing of the section. We measure it, match the hardness and the polymer, and cut a die to the section.

Send the section, or tell us what the joint has to seal.
